How to Prevent Clogged Drains at Home

How to Prevent Clogged Drains at Home

Most drain clogs do not happen overnight. They build up slowly from grease, hair, soap and food scraps. The good news is that a few easy habits can prevent most blockages.

In the Kitchen

  • Never pour grease or cooking oil down the sink. Let it cool and throw it in the trash.
  • Use a sink strainer to catch food scraps.
  • Run cold water while using the garbage disposal and for a few seconds afterward.
  • Avoid putting coffee grounds, rice, pasta or eggshells down the drain.

In the Bathroom

  • Fit a hair catcher over shower and tub drains.
  • Flush only toilet paper. Wipes, even those labeled flushable, can cause blockages.
  • Clean pop-up stoppers regularly to remove hair and soap buildup.

Simple Monthly Maintenance

Once a month, flush each drain with hot water to help clear light buildup. Avoid relying on chemical drain cleaners, which can be harsh on older pipes and rarely fix a deeper blockage.

When a Clog Will Not Go Away

If a drain keeps clogging, or several drains slow down at the same time, the blockage may be deeper in the line. Professional drain cleaning is one of our core plumbing services, and it clears the problem without damaging your pipes.
